AQUARIUS is a Flemish vocal ensemble with a penchant for contemporary music. This music has many faces and AQUARIUS wants to make all of them heard. In the past it devoted concerts exclusively to modern music. Today it combines the repertoire of new music with well-known pieces from the past.

Conductor and cellist MARK MICHAEL DE SMET studied at the Conservatories of Music in Ghent, Brussels, The Hague and Maastricht. He received his training as a conductor from Lucas Vis, with who he shares a passion for contemporary music. He also attended master classes with Franco Ferrera. Now he is teaching at the Conservatory of Ghent, choir, choir conducting, vocal ensemble, chamber music and string orchestra.
In 1983 De Smet founded DE NIEUWE MUZIEKGROEP, a larger instrumental ensemble, with which he gave more than one hundred Belgian premieres and which he led for seven years. In 1989 he conducted the premiere series of the scenic version of Karel Goeyvaerts' opera. In 1995 he founded the Goeyvaerts Consert, now called AQUARIUS. De Smet was awarded the Julien Roussel Prize in 1988 and the Fuga-price (Belgian Composers Organization) in 2005 for the promotion of Flemish/Belgian music. He leads workshops and master classes for choir and chamber music in Belgium as well as abroad.

Peter Schmidt is a canon connected to the Sint-Baafs Cathedral in Ghent. He was Head Librarian, Spiritual Director and finally President of the Episcopal Seminary. He gained some innovating insights into the theological themes of the Mystic Lamb. Peter Schmidt lectures at the Catholic University of Leuven and at various ecclesiastical institutes in Flanders and the Netherlands. Since 2000, he is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. Moreover, he is the author of several books and dozens of articles about fundamental theology, exegesis, faith and culture.
